Driving through Virginia was a long, albeit enriching experience for Joby Schraier. He first entered through the Northern part of the state, and took a day tour into Washington D.C. He was able to make it for a noon White House tour; and then spent the rest of the afternoon at the Lincoln and Washington memorials. He soon learned the peril of DC traffic when leaving at rush hour that night, and not making it to Richmond until midnight that night.
The next morning, he wasted no time in exploring the historic city that once served as the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Joby Schraier walked around Belle Isle, a former holding area for war prisoners located on an island in the middle of the rushing James River. It is a popular hangout for college students who want to get a tan on sunny days, who lay out blankets on the large stoned in the middle of the river. After that, he went and had lunch in Cary town, a popular neighborhood that is lined with pastel-colored art shops and cafes.
After leaving Richmond, he then went to Petersburg and toured the battlefield that became a turning point in the Civil War. After getting his history fix, Joby Schraier headed east towards Virginia Beach, beginning his long tour of the Southeast Coast. With all the fresh seafood and taste of beach life that Virginia Beach has to offer, it was a great intro into his next few days of driving.
